Pronoun

Replaces a noun

Pronouns substitute for nouns. Greek has several types:

Personal pronouns: • First person: ἐγώ (I), ἡμεῖς (we) • Second person: σύ (you sg), ὑμεῖς (you pl) • Third person: uses demonstratives, or αὐτός outside the nominative (αὐτόν = him)

Demonstratives: • οὗτος, αὕτη, τοῦτο (this, these) • ἐκεῖνος, ἐκείνη, ἐκεῖνο (that, those) • ὅδε, ἥδε, τόδε (this here)

Relative: ὅς, ἥ, ὅ (who, which, that) Interrogative: τίς, τί (who? what?) Indefinite: τις, τι (someone, something)

Recognition Tips

  • αὐτός in attributive position = 'same'; predicate = 'self'
  • Interrogative τίς has accent; indefinite τις is enclitic
  • Relative pronoun agrees with antecedent in gender/number
